When it got the BSOD on the 2.0 port it didn’t, thankfully, trash Stimon. Giving up on the Minolta, I tried an Epson scanner and it had the same trouble with the USB 2.0 ports (wouldn’t initialize) but it did work O.K. Restoring Stimon is quite a chore (disconnect and uninstall all USB devices, remove Stimon from Startup, boot to startup mode, Rename Stimon, boot to Safe Mode, delete Still Image Monitor, extract good copy of Stimon from Win98 setup, restore Stimon to startup menu, and re-install USB devices - instructions are from Microsoft.Com and Hewlett Packard). System is Halted’ BSOD that corrupted the still monitor file (Stimon.exe). Worst of all, while unknowingly using the scanner this way I had frequent ‘KEBUGCHECKEX. A subsequent call to Minolta confirmed that the scanner should initialize without having to launch the software. By starting up the software, the device would finally initialize.

When I went to install the Minolta DiMage IV scanner on the USB 2.0, the driver would install but the scanner wouldn’t initialize (the green light kept blinking). After the upgrade, In addition to the original 2 USB 1.1 ports, I added a CompUSA brand PCI card with 4 USB 2.0 ports.

except for having to upgrade and reload my TBS Montego (not V II) sound driver and having trouble to get my modem to dial silently. Other than the re-boot, things seemed to be O.K.

(Bad idea, because the difference between 1.1 and 2.0 on an image download is nominal compared to the scanning time.) Anyway, during the 98 -> SE upgrade there was a system crash in the last 10 minutes after which I restarted and the upgrade seemed to pick up where it left off. I wanted to add a film scanner so I got the not so bright idea to upgrade from Windows 98 OEM to 98SE in order to get USB 2.0 support.
